CASTLES & PALACES ↓

The Lungau region is shrouded in myths and legends and the many well-preserved castles and palaces are a reminder of this.

  • Mauterndorf adventure castle
The Mauterndorf adventure castle offers a journey through time for young and old. In the former summer residence of the Salzburg prince archbishops, the Middle Ages come to life - whether climbing up the 44 metre high defence tower with its fascinating view of Mauterndorf and the mountains, during an audience with the prince archbishop, in the Lungau Landscape Museum or at the knights' playground! For refreshments, head to the castle tavern with hearty delicacies (open all year round). An exciting tour with audio guide in German, English and Italian awaits you.

  • Moosham Castle
Due to its central location, Moosham was the seat of the Salzburg princes and archbishops from around 1520 and was also the blood and nursing court until 1790. At the end of the 17th century, numerous trials of "witches and sorcerers" took place at Moosham Castle. Count Hans Nepomuk Wilczek (1837-1922) bought the castle in 1886 and furnished it as a museum with artefacts he had collected. It is still owned by the family today. The museum focuses on: domestic culture from various stylistic periods (16th-19th centuries), sculptures, wagon castle, hunting weapons, North Pole expedition, courtroom with executioner's sword, torture chamber, finds from Roman times...

  • Finstergrün Castle
During an entertaining, approximately one-hour tour, you will learn lots of interesting facts about the old castle, the knights' castle, the new "count's castle" of the Szapary family and the later children's and youth castle up to the present day. Many details, from castle construction to chimneys and bull's-eye windows to the everyday life of servants, servants and counts, remain vivid memories here.

  • Thurnschall ruins in Lessach
According to legend, the Thurnschall-Weibl still guards a treasure in the ruins of the 13th century castle. The Lungau cultural hiking trail leads directly past the Thurnschall ruins on the way to Lessach. Of the ruins, which were already mentioned in the 13th century, the 8 metre high remains of the west tower are still visible today, indicating the irregular layout of the former fortress.

  • Klausegg ruins in Seetal
Klausegg is located around 10 kilometres east of Tamsweg, directly on the border between Salzburg and Styria, which was also the border between the prince-archbishopric of Salzburg and Habsburg Styria in the 13th century. Together with the "speaking name", this explains the function of the complex as a border fortification. The actual hermitage was located on the road, and a late medieval successor has been preserved to this day. From there, a partially preserved barrier wall ran up to the castle, which stood high on the southern slope of the valley.
